T78043 "Grotesques," tapestry woven in Flanders, possibly Oudenarde, in the second half of the 16th century, in linen and wool, depicting imaginative creatures among foliage and flowers, including dramatic dolphins in the two lower corners. This type of decoration was found in Roman buildings called grotte, excavated c. 1500. It is characterized by the use of imaginative creatures, floral motifs, animals, human figures and masks. These designs were considered fanciful and playful.
