Late 19th century silk stitch-resist tie-dyed (shibori) ceremonial cloth from the Cham people of Cambodia. Aubergine colored ground with trellis pattern outlined by resist dyed squares of yellow and off-white, with a floral burst in the center of each.

Exhibited at Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan, 2003

A late 19th century lawon, a ceremonial presentation scarf worn by a married woman. This multi-colored silk cloth was resist dyed in a process called plangi or pelangi, literally meaning, “rainbow”. From Sumatra, Indonesia. The ends of the cloth are undyed silk, and the pattern consists of a central green diamond, surrounded by a diamond shaped purple border, and a rich red color. This piece is mounted for hanging.
