A Kuba “velvet”, a raphia cut-pile embroidery panel from the Congo.  The raphia threads used in the pile have been rubbed between the embroiderer’s hands in order to soften them, thus giving them a silk-like texture, which 20^th century western scholars termed, “velvet”.  This cloth is embroidered with an endless knot pattern with black and natural colored embroidery and cut-pile embroidery.
